Camps, Camps and More Camps

Tom Berg
USD Sports Information Coordinator

The summer is technically the offseason for the USD athletic department. That doesn’t mean USD things aren’t busy around the DakotaDome.

Several sports – including football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and swimming and diving – are or will have camps taking place at the DakotaDome this summer. Men’s and women’s basketball have already held camps with more scheduled in the month of June, while volleyball is in the midst of holding a camp for grades K-8 now. Swimming and diving also has two camp sessions scheduled for June.

USD football hosts the largest camp in the Midwest in July. In 2009, more than 75 teams and 2,000 athletes took part.

USD softball held clinics indoors during the winter, while USD women’s soccer held its annual Futsal Camp in February.

These events provide campers with a Division I experience while at the same time, also providing great exposure to USD athletics and the campus itself.

Schedules

It’s hard to believe that the season opener for the USD football team is now less than three months away. The Coyotes will compete at FBS foe Central Florida on Sept. 4, and follow that with a game at another FBS foe, Minnesota on Sept. 11.

USD’s home schedule should provide fans with several entertaining games. USD’s home opener is Sept. 18 against Northwestern Oklahoma State (Hall of Fame Day). The Coyotes will follow that with a Dakota Days game against rival North Dakota on Oct. 2. USD will also play host to perennial FCS power Northern Iowa on Oct. 16 before hosting a pair of quality FCS opponents, Northern Colorado and Cal Poly, on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, respectively. For a school in its third year of transitioning to Division I FCS status, this is an excellent home schedule.

Schedules have recently been released for USD volleyball, women’s soccer and swimming and diving as well. Highlights for the USD volleyball team includes matches against major conference programs such as Kansas State and Georgia, plus the renewal of its rivalry with in-state rival South Dakota State. USD will face SDSU on Sept. 18 in Fargo, N.D., and face the Jackrabbits again on Nov. 2 in Brookings, S.D.

The USD women’s soccer team has an interesting schedule, with a stretch of six straight home games followed by a stretch of seven straight road games. The Coyotes will play host to UM-Kansas City, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis, Western Illinois, Creighton, Idaho and Eastern Washington during that homestand. The Coyotes will renew their rivalry with SDSU on Sept. 22 in Brookings. USD will face five Summit League teams in 2010, a year before joining the league in 2011-12.

USD swimming and diving also has some quality home meets scheduled, starting with a matchup against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Nov. 6. The Coyote women will play host to Nebraska on Nov. 19. USD will also play host to South Dakota State (Jan. 21) and North Dakota (Jan. 29) during the year.

All four USD teams mentioned have quality schedules, including several great home matchups. Should be fun to follow in 2010-11.
