Derek Miles
Tom Berg USD Sports Information Coordinator |
Derek Miles is putting together the type of career most athletes dream of – and he’s far from being done yet.
The two-time Olympian – and USD graduate -- recently qualified for the 2009 World Outdoor Track and Field Championships after tying for second place in the pole vault at the USA Outdoor Championships Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Miles, who also is an assistant track and field coach at USD, cleared a height of 5.75 (18-10 1/4) at the event.
Miles already has an impressive athletic resume: he was fourth in the pole vault at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China; he won the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials; was the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Champion; and also competed in the pole vault at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
That is one heck of a career, and at age 36, he still continues to perform at an elite level.
It’s interesting to follow Miles’ career as he continues to compete on a world-wide stage. He told the Argus Leader that he plans to compete in meets in Europe in July before returning home to train for the world championships.
The World Outdoor Championships are set for Berlin, Germany on Aug. 15-18.
